What a sweet week for Steelhead fishing The Grand river was on fire this week as i fished it while the muskegon river was clearing from the rain of last week. late in the week i returned to the muskegon river and Friday it was fishing very well. Saturday on the muskegon river was another story as the warm weather had many fishing the river the fish shut down , As many i talked to do not do well. Saturday my boat only had one Steelhead although we did boat many very nice Trout. I only talked to one boat on the river that did have a good day hitting nine steelhead and Had fished a different stretch of river than I. You just had to be at the right place at the right time. The rivers are clearing and we have some good weather this week Should be a good week I do have Thursday open this week.

The Grand River is fishing very well And I would like to be on the Grand right now.

Fall STEELHEAD FISHING

www.riverratdog.com 517 6512616

Got some rain the last part of the week The rivers in returned have come up and tainted the water. Salmon fishing on the Muskegon river remained very good this week including Saturday in rising water.

Sundays fishing was to before Steelhead but with the high stained water we decided to wait a day of two since I have some days open this week.

This will be the thing we need to really get the Steelhead fishing going

Fishing the Muskegon this river this weekend with Joe and Karen from California We casted the fly rods with dry flys for Trout. The Trout did not disappoint us. As always the Muskegon being a very technical river. There were some fly changes as the Trout moved from feeding on caddis to bwo's and to midges. Lots of fish rising to the surface. Joe was camera shy so here's Karen

The river water temps are falling! The Salmon and Trout are keying in on the falling temps and feasting. Trout fishing on the Muskegon river river remains excellent Drys or nymphs (flying ants, caddis). A few Salmon can be seen in the Muskegon river. Salmon are through out the Manistee river and fishing pressure is picking up. The rain Saturday did not relieve the fishing pressure.

Lake Michigan has rolled over and near shore water temps are near 50 degrees. This has sent more Skamania and Coho up the St. Joe river, Although the river level remains high after last weeks rains.

The Muskegon river fished well this weekend. We even saw a few chinook Salmon.
We fished the river late in the afternoon until after dark. Are goal was to catch fish on dry flys.
When we were able to get a good presentation we were rewarded. The 12 to 14 inch trout did keep us busy. We were unable to land any big ones, and we did have some big ones on.
We had beautiful evening for fishing Ah summer.

Wow I have been a little more than remiss blogging, a hole month! How the summer goes.
Salmon are in the rivers a usual for this time of year. i have had a couple of days of casting for these early Salmon with success.

Rivers are running cool due to cool summer nights. Some have said that the Salmon will run early this year, myself believe that it will be a normal run. July Trout fishing was better that normal although not all stellar days.

The Grand river was just clearing up and Small mouth fishing was much improved. Until the 2.5 inches on rain Saturday.
The Cohos are in the grand along with a few Steelhead. That's how cool the Grand has been. That how the rain fall has been this year 2 to 4 inches at a time.

A fresh run of Skamania have come up the St Joe Hurray. Great time of year to fish I have trips on the St. Joe for Skams coming up, Trips on the Muskegon for Trout this week and next week casting for Salmon on the Manistee. I will have to cancel the trip for Small Mouth on the Grand for today and Monday to muddy maybe will fish another river.

I have to get the camera out and up load some pictures. But right now I have to go fishing.

Hexes: fishing the hex hatch on the Manistee and fishing has been good waster levels are nice.

The Muskegon levels are Normal getting close to Drift boat only fishing. The Muskegon is fishing well Brown Trout and Small mouth. Most the rivers south of M57 are very high and unfish-able.

Cooler air temps have the hatches slowing down. Skamania are in the St. Joe and Manistee

http://www.riverratdog.com/ 517 651 2616 This week in fishing Michigan.

Fished the Saginaw Bay with friends and their boat. We did get a few Walleye before the boat motor stared to act up and forced us in.

We fished the Bay on Thursday and is was a calm day on the bay. I could not believe how many boats were out for a Thursday. We fished body baits and Spoons, many boats were fishing live bait.

We did manage a few Walleye

Friday I fished small mouth bass with John T. a beginning fly fisher. John did a fine job of casting getting the fly out to structure. We did manage a few fish I was disappointed in are return of fish.

The section of the Grand River we fished would normally yield 30 fish of more. We had not received any rain in 10 days yet the river clarity was low, I would have to attribute this to open farm fields.

Saturday and Sunday I was on the Muskegon river with Jim and Tom. Lots on hatches on the Muskegon. Gray Drakes. Sulfurs, Caddis and midges were all in the mix and lots of trout on the rise.

Jim And Tom were also first time fly fishing and two days of fishing and casting instructions paid off. Both casted much better Sunday and that was nice for me to see. We fished wet and dry flies, both brought fish to the net.

Also fished Small mouth bass two days Lots of action on the Small mouth nothing over 3 pounds
One trip on fly and one casting both trip went well.

Also spent a couple of days on Saginaw Bay for walleyes Got some eyes and Cat fish. The wind kicked up and got so rough we had to come in.

Lake Michigan Salmon fishing has also been good Captain Dave Hasting on the Renegade has been Doing very well the past ten days out of Grand Haven.

Went Trout fishing (May 19) on the upper Manistee. Slid the drift boat in the river about a mile up river of the CCC bridge and fished down to Sharon rd. bridge (about an 8 hour float). It was a Sunny day and a high pressure weather system was well in place.

I love this stretch of river Lots of cover and under cuts for the Brown trout and Brook Trout.

Are intent was to strip streamer for for Big Brown Trout. We got on the river about Noon and there was a massive hatch going on lots of caddis and big drakes. So it appeared that a dry caddis might be in-order, and early on we got in to a couple of Brook Trout not of any size so no picture this early in the day. Turned out that it would be are only opportunity to get a photo of fish.
We ended up getting off the river before the Drakes fell at fish thirty. We did have some nice sunburns and a few Black fly bites, and good memory's of the day

THis last week has been interesting with the rain and cooled weather. Had Steelhead in the Muskegon river to fish and getting Steelhead to the net all week. Then the rain came and theMuskegon River went on the rise. Friday I had famed chemist Dr. Darren Baker on the boat, he needed to land a Steelhead to add to his list of fish he has fished and landed Dr. Baker has fished all over the world and has landed 129 different species of fish. By now you have probably guessed what happen for Dr. Darren Baker, that's right he never got a Steelhead to the net. He got close but Steelhead after Steelhead something would happen a the Steelhead would not get to the net. The Mukegon river did rise for Friday and only Friday to 5800CFS and almost 8.5 level. Went right back out Sat. and the Muskegon river went right back down to 3000CFS and a level of 6.5 and the boats on the river reduced by half. And Scott and Karen Witter had their way with the Steelhead

Weekend Steelhead & Trout

The weekend fished well Some nice Steelhead and Trout river level and visibility are very nice

Friday, May 8, 2009

IT Was A good week on the river If your name was Lisa and you were Steelhead fishing the Muskegon river with the River Rat Dog Guide Service. You would have gotten your first Steelhead and on a Fly rod

The Muskegon river was near flood stage today 6inches more would have put it there. The water was dirty and the fishing was sporadic, we did catch a good number of Steelhead Rainbow trout and Brown trout and you can find reports of guides having caught way to many Steelhead today. But these are the guides that sit in one spot all day 100 feet from the boat ramp, raking gravel spawning Steelhead.Thats not the way I like to fish and I don't believe that is what clients want. But if you like to fish in one place all day that you could walk to. I have the information you need to fish Spawning Steelhead. Good DayMAY 1, 2009 The Muskegon river was rocking today up to 6000 cfm from 4800 yesterday. The Steelhead were still on the bite along with the Rainbow and Brown Trout.April 30 2009 It was just one of those days you get now and then. Just went out fishing with a friend and it rained all day, the water level was high at 6.5 the water temp was at 52degrees. But hay the catching was phenomenal. We both have about 30 Steelhead on and landed 12 or 14 each. The fish were hot getting from on side of the river to the other in the air, out of the water it was unreal.I would like to go fishing with some one that clams to catch 100 Steelhead a day. I was at 30 and fished 8 hours and was busy all day.Of course I used a 7wt rod today and should have had a least an eight wt. Man those fish were crazy today.Water continues to run higher than normal fishing continues to be very good. Here it is the end of April and Steelhead fishing remains strong on the Muskegon river. The recent rains have the river level up and stained, but the Steelhead are taking Flys, and Fly fishing is what I have been doing the most the last ten days.I look for a New pod of Steelhead to enter the river in this high water. The Steelhead fishing should be available into June. Trout fishing has also been good we have fished a few afternoons, for Brown trout and rainbow trout taking dry flys.
